Zimbabwe Accelerates BRICS Membership Bid as Economic Bloc Expands Global Influence
Zimbabwe has formally submitted its application to join the BRICS economic bloc, joining a growing list of nations seeking membership in the coalition that now spans 11 countries. Foreign Affairs Minister Amon Murwira confirmed the move, stating the application aligns with President Mnangagwa’s directive to deepen Zimbabwe’s integration into the global economy. The bid comes as BRICS gains traction among emerging markets, with 23 countries reportedly expressing interest.
The push reflects broader geopolitical shifts as developing nations seek alternatives to traditional Western-dominated financial systems. BRICS—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and six newer members—has increasingly positioned itself as a counterweight to G7 economies. Indonesia’s accession in January 2025 marked a milestone for the bloc’s expansion strategy.
Market observers note that successful applications could reshape trade flows and commodity markets, particularly for Zimbabwe’s mining sector. The country’s inclusion WOULD further solidify BRICS’ footprint in Africa, where it already counts Egypt and Ethiopia as members.
